Levels of Water Damage Severity in Norristown, PA Homes

You know, of course, that a spilled glass of water requires just a towel to clean up, not an entire water damage restoration team barging in to your Norristown, PA home. The time to call a professional is when there is destruction and the cleanliness of the water is in question. ServiceMaster Professional Cleaning and Restoration is here to answer your call!

Our technicians are certified by the IICRC. We know how to treat each type of water damage and each level of damage.

Types of Water Damage

Category 1 – Liquid from a sink, faucet, or some other source that is clean and sanitary. This is the safest category of water damage and the easiest to clean, but it can quickly deteriorate if left untended.

Category 2 – Liquid from a dishwasher, washing machine, or toilet that is slightly contaminated. Often called “grey water,” this liquid can cause illness or discomfort if ingested.

Category 3 – Liquid from a sewage backup, flooding bodies of water, or stagnant liquid. This is the worst type of water damage as standing water can begin to support bacteria and mold growth.

Levels of Water Damage

Class 1– Only part of the room was affected and the liquid has a slow evaporation rate. Typically, the moisture has only contacted floors or items that have extremely low levels of permeability such as plywood or concrete.

Class 2 – The entire room is affected and wetness is visible at least 12″ up the walls. With a higher evaporation rate, this liquid may infiltrate the building’s structure more than you realize.

Class 3 –  Liquid with a highest evaporation rate. Walls, ceilings, insulation, and flooring quickly become fully saturated with water, most likely from an overhead source.

Class 4 – Specialty drying situations. Liquid has been stagnant for an extended period of time or has fully saturated low permeance objects, such as hardwood, brick, or stone.

Dealing not only with the different types of liquids, but the tailoring repair services to the extent of the damage is enough to cause anyone’s head to spin. The IICRC teaches technicians to identify the class and category of different types of water damage and create a restoration plan that will fit the needs of the building accordingly.
